February Full Snow Moon & Jupiter with its Moons
Hey everyone! I hope you've all been having an amazing weekend.
Last night our sky had a lot of activity!
We had our February full moon. Also known as the Snow Moon or the Hunger Moon. This is because February is usually the coldest month of winter which leads to heavy snow falls. Making it harder to hunt back in the days giving it the name of the Hunger Moon as well.
We also had a lunar eclipse as well as a comet passing close to Earth.
Unfortunately, I wasn't able to see the comet because it was below the horizon still when I was outside. And I missed the eclipse because the first time I had read about it coming I had gotten different times than the actual time it started. Its okay though. You win some and you lose some.
However, I was able to get a view of the full moon as well as Jupiter and its moons and I have a couple of photos to show you.
We had fog all day yesterday. So I was ecstatic when the sky cleared up nicely just in time for me to view Luna. I used my cell phone to capture this photo of the moon through the lens of my telescope.
After we all looked at the moon for a while, my brother wanted to check out this bright star we could see in the sky. Once he found it he said that it was super bright in the lens but that it looked like there was also a line near it. So I looked through the lens and saw that there was four little stars near the bright star forming a straight line. We were wondering what it was when I remembered seeing Jupiter around that area in my SkyPortal app. Then I told my brother that I thought it might be Jupiter and maybe its moons. (I wasn't 100% positive but I thought Jupiter had four.)
Using my app, I lined up my phone to my telescope and saw that we were looking at Jupiter. Checked the visibility of its moons and saw that they were all four showing and at a visibility of about 99.5%. The app will also show you the locations of specific things in the sky. I searched the moons that were showing in the sky at the moment and other than ours, only four more were showing. Jupiter's. It even showed them lined up like how we were seeing. I wasn't sure if I would be able to get a photo with my cell phone. Its hard enough getting a good photo of the moon but Jupiter and her moons. Now thats a stretch. Although, I was able to get a shot. Albeit a slightly blurry one.
I hope you guys enjoyed these photos! They do the actual beauty no justice.
